Weather forecasts for the Iberian Peninsula and the Balearic Islands
Weather forecasts for mainland Spain and the Balearic Islands for the next 96 hours on an hourly scale.
It includes the Next Hour tool, for very short-term weather forecasting (nowcasting), which offers precipitation predictions at ten-minute intervals for the next hour.
The forecasts for the first four days are made with the WRF numerical model (nested at the 12:00 UTC output of the GFS model) with a spatial resolution of 8 km.
From the fifth to tenth days from the consultation date, the app offers predictions framed in a range of uncertainty, with data related exclusively to temperature and precipitation, from the Global Ensemble Forecasting System (GEFS).
In addition, predictions are shown for the following meteorological variables: temperature, precipitation, wind direction and speed, and humidity. It also includes information on sunrise and sunset times, moon phase and tides.
The prediction is of a general nature and does not apply correction techniques to the output of the model, except for a simple correction of the topography. Therefore, there may be systematic biases in some locations, especially in areas of complex orography. Likewise, it is important to take into account that the prediction of some phenomena is intrinsically uncertain. For example, it is not possible to predict the time and place where summer storms will hit.
To illustrate the precision and limitations of a prediction with this resolution, the validation section is maintained, which, using the AEMET observation network, allows the prediction of the last few days to be compared with the observed data. This evaluation is an option not available in other similar applications.
